Our minds are naturally perfect but because of our obscurations and afflictions, we have forgotten our true pure nature. In the Vajrayana practices of Tibetan Buddhism, there are many meditations that help us remember who we truly are, and are able to cut through the illusory appearances of cyclic existence.

The chanting practice of Green Tara is one such method. Tara symbolizes the compassion and action of all the Buddhas and is able to swiftly liberate us from fear by connecting us to our intrinsic nature. She is usually depicted in traditional art with her right leg bent, ready to jump up to help all sentient beings. She has a loving expression on her face as she is a compassionate expression of all of the buddhas.

Tara means ‘Star’ in Sanskrit, and her Tibetan name, Drolma, means “rescuer”. She is able to guide or rescue beings from the eight outer fears – the symbolic fears of lions, elephants, fire, snakes, thieves, water, bondage, and evil spirits, and from the eight inner fears – the fears of pride, ignorance, anger, jealousy, wrong views, attachment, miserliness, and deluded doubts.

Chöje Akong Rinpoche, the founder of Tara Rokpa Centre, requested that Green Tara Prayers be done at TRC daily. With that in mind, we will be dedicating this weekend to the study, reflection, and practice of Green Tara. We will also commemorate the life of  Chöje Akong Tulku Rinpoche on this 10th anniversary of his passing.

This weekend is aimed at all practitioners wanting to deepen their understanding of Green Tara deity meditation and do the practice, as well as those people wanting to spend time reflecting on their connection to Akong Rinpoche.

The prayers will be led by senior practitioners.
