SUMMARY:Personal Practice Retreat with Alan Muller
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\nTara’s Valley was chosen by Akong Rinpoche for personal practice retreats. 4-year traditional retreats are out of the reach of most people leading modern lives. It is a great challenge for lay practitioners to find the time or place to complete such practices as the Ngondro. These are the foundational practices of Tibetan Buddhism. The retreats are not closed and people can go for walks in the surrounding areas. \nRetreat Dates\nThe next retreat will take place from 1st – 19th October 2017. In 2018\,  a retreat is scheduled from 17th March – 8th April 2018. Participants can stay for a minimum of one week\, at R250 per day. \nTara’s Valley Retreat Centre\nThe retreat area is sustainably built\, and uses solar power for lighting and water heating. It uses wind power for water pumping. There are two adjacent buildings; a brick-built house\, which contains four single retreat rooms\, a kitchen/dining area and the shrine room\, and a Lassak (mud)-built house with three single rooms. \nRetreat Support for Ngondro Practice\nThe retreat support is Alan Muller who is also accommodated in Tara’s Valley. He took refuge in 1997 with Akong Rinpoche. In 2003\, he completed a one-year closed retreat under the guidance of Lama Yeshe Rinpoche at Samye Ling Monastery in Scotland. During this period\, he took novice monks vows. Alan remained a novice monk for six years and now presents courses and retreats as a layperson. He has formed Ngondro groups since 2004 around Southern Africa. \nBookings: https://goo.gl/forms/LGPPgRQ8tp2C5fmt1

SUMMARY:The Power of Compassion Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Former Tibetan Buddhist Monk\, Choden\, will introduce us to compassion practices. These help to cultivate inner safeness and self-care. Self-compassion means extending compassion to oneself in instances of perceived inadequacy\, failure\, or general suffering. We can extend self-kindness to others and the planet. Drawing from Buddhist insights\, compassion is vital to the integrity and sustainability of the world we live in. We will introduce practices to build on the compassion we have cultivated for ourselves and extend it to all living beings and the environment we live in. \nFor those who have participated in Rob Nairn’s Mindfulness-based Living Courses\, this is the next step. We move from mindfulness to compassion\, to insight and wisdom. \nThe retreat consists of talks\, guided practices\, meditations in nature\, silent sitting and group inquiry. There will also be opportunities to discuss the ethic of Ubuntu/Botho as a follow up to HH the Dalai Lama’s Dialogue in Botswana. \nBackground\nScientific research shows that compassion is an evolved capacity within the brain. It has the capacity to soften and heal the stress and compulsiveness that so characterize modern life. Although compassion is generally linked to kith and kin\, our new brain propensities enable us to extend this to people of different races and cultural backgrounds. Compassion enables us to find a stable place within ourselves. From here\, we can relate with wisdom and kindness to the strong forces of emotions of anxiety\, anger and sadness that move through us. We can also relate to the struggles of other people and find a place of genuine empathy for them. \nPractices\nBuddhist contemplative practice reaffirms the transforming power of compassion. It charts a path to move from genuine self compassion to compassion for others. We will use the model of the Four Immeasurable Contemplations of love\, compassion\, joy and equanimity. Mindfulness is key to this process\, where we find a place of stillness and stability within ourselves. But mindfulness on its own is not enough. We need also to bring a warmth and kindness to ourselves\, to bring self compassion into the mindfulness practice. This lays the ground for resilience and self care. And then too\, self compassion is not enough. It is the basis for compassion for others: seeing how others suffer just as we do. This connection with others is the basis of transformation. \nWe will introduce practices to cultivate inner safeness and self-care that are crucial to building emotional resilience and healthy relationships. Then\, we will then draw on insights from Buddhism to show that compassion is vital to the integrity and sustainability of the world we live in. We will introduce practices to build on the compassion we have cultivated for ourselves and extend it to all living beings and the environment we live in. \nRetreat Leader and Support\nFormally a monk for seven years within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition\, Choden (aka Sean Mc Govern) completed a three year\, three month retreat in 1997. He has been a practicing Buddhist since 1985. Originally from South Africa\, Choden trained as a lawyer and learned meditation under the guidance of Rob Nairn. Now Choden is involved in developing secular mindfulness and compassion programmes. These draw upon the wisdom and methods of the Buddhist tradition\, as well as contemporary insights from psychology and neuroscience. He is an honorary fellow of the University of Aberdeen and teaches on their Postgraduate Study Programme in Mindfulness (MSc). This is the first of its kind to include compassion in its curriculum. In 2013 he published a book with Paul Gilbert\, entitled ‘Mindful Compassion’. The book explores the interface between Buddhist and Evolutionary approaches to compassion training. \nChoden will be supported by Lucy Draper-Clarke\, who has a doctorate in mindfulness and teacher education. She has practised yoga for 20 years and taught yoga and mindfulness in Botswana and South Africa since 2006. She has been lucky enough to study with inspiring Buddhist mindfulness\, and Vinyasa yoga\, teachers\, and offers a combined practice known as Mindfulness Yoga. Her light-hearted approach to teaching allows participants to learn through a joyful\, yet transformative practice. \nRetreat Costs\nThe cost covers accommodation (including bedding and towels)\, food (including 3 ovo-lactarian vegetarian meals per day\, snacks and teas)\, environmental levy to support the Tikologo permaculture site\, and a contribution towards the facilitator’s flight cost: \nSingle\, shared bathroom:              R4562\nTwin/double en suite:                    R4100\nTwin/double\, shared bathroom:  R3500\nDormitory:                                        R2830\nCamping (own tent):                       R2357 \nA deposit of R1800 should accompany the booking\, to confirm your room choice. There are only five en suite rooms available. If they have been taken by the time your deposit arrives\, you will be allocated to a twin/double with shared bathroom. The deposit is non-refundable\, but is transferable to another retreat\, or another person on the waiting list. \nTo book\, please fill in the online booking form here: https://goo.gl/forms/kp3VByarzR3Tc97N2 \nDana will be accepted by the retreat facilitator in appreciation of the teachings. \nFor more general retreat information\, click here

SUMMARY:Fierce Equanimity Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a four night retreat in the tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Led by lay and monastic dharma teachers\, the retreat will provide an opportunity to create peace within ourselves by cultivating heart wisdom and relaxing into the wonders of the present moment. \nFierce equanimity can be thought of as being engaged with the world’s suffering and even acting to change what is deemed unacceptable\, yet remaining steadfast as one would in meditation. This means that the fluctuations of the mind – anger\, frustration\, and the feelings arising from injustice and the world’s horrors – must be witnessed and allowed to dissolve. Once the mind sees clearly\, focused and more grounded action can take place. \nBut\, letting go of anger and embracing equanimity does not mean succumbing to passivity. As Larry Ward and Peggy Rowe teach\, “Fierce equanimity often means being part of a slow moving force\, but one that is startling in its power and lasting in its effect. Dr Martin Luther King is Larry’s model of fierce equanimity. Though (King) had a lifelong dedication to nonviolence (an important component of equanimity)\, no-one could call him a passive force. Rather\, he heeded the call to remain collected and compassionate in the long fight for social change – to powerful results. If anger is the blinding flare\, then equanimity is the slow burn that drives us day in and day out.” \nJoin us as we wrap ourselves in the beauty of silence of TRC and root ourselves deeply into the earth – nurturing joy\, clarity and insight through the creative expression of yoga\, dance\, sitting\, eating and walking meditation.  Both new and experienced practitioners will enjoy this opportunity to deepen in stillness. \nRetreat Facilitators\nThe retreat will lead by Drs. Larry Ward\, Peggy Rowe\, Ava Avalos and Sister Peace who have studied and practiced together with Thich Nhat Hanh for over 20 years. \nPeggy and Larry live on Vashon Island\, Washington.  Larry has enjoyed over 30 years as a Christian Minister.  In 2001\, Peggy and Larry received Dharma Teacher Transmission from Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. \nDeeply inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Larry Ward has spent his life committed to nonviolent social change\, healing\, and transformation on a global level. In his capacity as International Director of the Institute of Cultural Affairs\, he served in leadership programmes in 35 countries engaged in socio-economic development projects in urban and rural areas. For more information about Larry’s work\, and a video interview with him\, click here. \nPeggy Rowe…\nhas her doctorate in Adult Education and Counseling Psychology.  Peggy serves as a spiritual director for Buddhist practitioners in the US\, as well as in Thailand.  She and Larry co-authored Love’s Garden that was chosen as an outstanding Buddhist publication for 2010.  Together they offer retreats in the United States\, Canada\, Europe\, Asia and this will be their first one in South Africa. \nAva Avalos…\nis an HIV specialist physician who has been living and working in Botswana for the past 14 years. Her area of clinical research and expertise focuses on HIV & TB drug resistance and treatment failure. She also directs her own medical practice and consultancy business in Gaborone. Completing her education in dance and physiological science before studying medicine in California\, Ava continues to teach dance and yoga to both children and adults. She loves her life in Botswana where she supports a regular sangha group\, in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. \n Sister Peace…\ncurrently resides at Plum Village\, France and has been a monastic since 2008. She is a delightful presence and wise teacher\, with a warm voice and ‘young at heart’ energy.  This her second visit to the Tara Rokpa Centre. In 2010\, she co-led a beautiful retreat for participants from Botswana and South Africa. TRC is delighted to welcome her back and to share her wisdom with the international community. \nTo read a beautiful interview with Sister Peace\, click here. \nJoin the teachers and root yourselves into the earth. There will be yoga\, dance\, sitting\, eating and walking meditation. Both new and experienced practitioners will enjoy this opportunity to deepen in stillness. \nRetreat Costs\nThe cost is per person\, and covers accommodation (including bedding and towels)\, food (including 3 ovo-lactarian vegetarian meals per day\, snacks and teas)\, environmental levy to support the Tikologo permaculture site\, and a contribution towards the facilitators’ flight costs: \n\n\n\n\n4 nights\n\n\nTwin/double en suite (per person)\nR3 000\n\n\nTwin/double shared bathroom (per person)\nR2 500\n\n\nDormitory (per person)\nR2 000\n\n\n\nA deposit of R1800 should accompany the booking\, to confirm your room choice. There is simple\, comfortable accommodation at the Centre\, and we can keep warm around the fire at night. \nMountain-Biking\nMike Draper will arrange routes of different levels to suit all cyclists\, including a ride to Die Oog. Her style focuses on bringing mindful awareness into physical practice\, so that we can be fully aware of our bodies. This can be of great benefit to active sports participants\, as well as those wanting to find ways to relax. \nFor a video teaser of one of the routes\, click here and for memories of a previous retreat\, try this link. And below\, a tempting taste of what one of the days will have in store: \n\nWater Wonderland Tour\nA ride to the enchanted Marico Eye\, pristine source of the Groot Marico river. This ride is all on district gravel roads and is suitable for families and those new to off-road riding. Warm up on a long\, steady pull up from the valley\, out into big sky country\, then either roll down directly to the cooling delight of the crystal-clear Eye\, or continue along the ridge\, past the old slate quarry\, followed by an exhilarating drop. Stop and enjoy the view if the shaking gets too much. Now you will have some work to do\, to return to the Source. Keep in mind the refreshing dip to come\, as you start to climb. Finally\, back at the Eye\, its time for that reward. Put on swimming goggles and paddle amongst the lilies while swallows and dragonflies skim the surface nearby. Dry off in the sun and then flop down under the willows for a sumptuous picnic. Time even for a nap perhaps\, before its back on the bike. SUMMARY:Dzogchen Retreat with Melanie Polatinsky
DESCRIPTION:What is Dzogchen? It holds that one’s nature and true essence is able to remain unaffected by life’s trials and tribulations. What if we could be open to everything that arises and not buy into the story we automatically tell ourselves about our thoughts? Dzgochen\, which means Great Perfection\, is designed to awaken us and connect us to our pure nature. One doesn’t have to “do” anything in the practice. All we have to “do” is to let the thoughts that create our suffering arise and dissolve on their own. The meditation practice of the Great Perfection is specifically designed to break up these obscuring mental habits of mind. We will practise this in the beautiful surrounds of the Tara Rokpa Centre and will be blanketed in compassion and loving-kindness. “In this way the Great Perfection is the union of perfect wisdom (the recognition of our true nature) and perfect compassion (the spontaneous activity that heals the suffering of ourselves and others.) \nDr Melanie Polatinsky\, psychologist and renowned Buddhist teacher\, will lead this retreat. Find out more about Melanie here: http://randburg.kagyu.org.za/dr-melanie-polatinsky. \nPlease book through this link:\nhttps://goo.gl/forms/LGPPgRQ8tp2C5fmt1

Join us! \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION: \nThe weekend will be divided up into sessions for permaculture and sessions for play. Each will speak to the next and will not stand on its own. See below for a taste of some of the things we will be doing… \n• Tree planting and some permie info which goes with that. Drawing trees!\n• Planting a companion herb bed. – This is quite cool as it deals with the permaculture concept of polycultural diversity and perennial gardening as well as companion planting.\n• Making a worm farm – This will be fun for the kids as they will get to check out worms and learn a little bit about soil fertility. Watching worms. Doing worm breakdancing. Drawings\, dance moves and poems inspired by worms!\n• Making a rain garden – this is a water harvesting system and a great thing for people to learn about and see how easy it is to harvest water without needing tanks or much infrastructure. Make-believe is a large part of play: here we will tell some stories about various rain gods and goddesses.\n• Another fun thing to do is to make clay seed balls. This is a pretty awesome technique and often used by urban ‘guerrilla gardeners’ but is just as fun to try at home. We will get to play with mud and get dirty and once the seed balls dry we can go on a seed bombing expedition. J Seed bombing in our Sunday best with Mud Hats! \nA little on Permaculture: Bill Mollison\, one of the founders of Permaculture states that: \n“Permaculture is an ethical design system for creating sustainable human environments…On one level it deals with plants\, animals\, buildings and infrastructures. However\, permaculture is not about these elements themselves\, but rather\, about the relationships we can create between them. The aim is to create systems that are ecologically sound and economically viable\, which provide for their own needs\, do not exploit or pollute and are therefore sustainable in the long term.” \nPermaculture can teach us to take responsibility for our lives and cater to our needs in ways which do not destroy our natural environment. These are skills which will become ever more important and will greatly contribute to the health and well-being of future generations. The sooner our kids can learn about them the better! \nPlay is often considered a ‘waste of time’\, a frivolous\, useless activity reserved only for children. We are told to ‘Grow up! Get a job! And get serious about life.’ Increasingly\, however\, play is seen to be crucial\, not just for children\, but for adults too – with special benefits in the work place. And it’s never too late to play! Playing facilitates learning and individual growth. Playing is very much a part of any creative process. Play assists this process by flexing our imagination muscles: when we play we ‘pretend’\, we ‘make believe’\, which in turn expands possibilities. In this way play creates fertile ground for new collaborations\, new connections and new ideas to germinate. \nThis event’s play sessions will be inspired by Anthea’s most recent Play Retreat held at the centre with Roberto Pombo in January 2017: https://www.facebook.com/events/706331969521663/ Some of what the playful sessions will include: \n• Make believe and pretend play\, day dreaming\, risky play\, rituaIised play\, competitive game-play and more. Learning about your relationship to play: What is play for you? Have you forgotten how? Why is play important?\n• Playing with and in mud: making mud castles\, mud facemasks and mud weed hats.\n• Drawing and collecting\, hiding and finding things\, possible treasure hunts\n• Automatic drawing and writing\, playing with chance and the sub/unconscious when making. Playing with paint\, charcoal and\, of course\, mud.\n• Adventuring and wandering into the wilderness of the Groot Marico as an explorer\, investigator\, quiet and gentle observer and responding creatively and curiously to what is there. \nCOURSE FEES:\nThe cost for this lovely long weekend experience includes 4 nights accommodation\, 3 full days of activities and delicious vegetarian meals per day.
