SUMMARY:Personal Practice Retreat with Alan Muller
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\nTara’s Valley was chosen by Akong Rinpoche for personal practice retreats. 4-year traditional retreats are out of the reach of most people leading modern lives. It is a great challenge for lay practitioners to find the time or place to complete such practices as the Ngondro. These are the foundational practices of Tibetan Buddhism. The retreats are not closed and people can go for walks in the surrounding areas. \nRetreat Dates\nThe next retreat will take place from 1st – 19th October 2017. In 2018\,  a retreat is scheduled from 17th March – 8th April 2018. Participants can stay for a minimum of one week\, at R250 per day. \nTara’s Valley Retreat Centre\nThe retreat area is sustainably built\, and uses solar power for lighting and water heating. It uses wind power for water pumping. There are two adjacent buildings; a brick-built house\, which contains four single retreat rooms\, a kitchen/dining area and the shrine room\, and a Lassak (mud)-built house with three single rooms. \nRetreat Support for Ngondro Practice\nThe retreat support is Alan Muller who is also accommodated in Tara’s Valley. He took refuge in 1997 with Akong Rinpoche. In 2003\, he completed a one-year closed retreat under the guidance of Lama Yeshe Rinpoche at Samye Ling Monastery in Scotland. During this period\, he took novice monks vows. Alan remained a novice monk for six years and now presents courses and retreats as a layperson. He has formed Ngondro groups since 2004 around Southern Africa. \nBookings: https://goo.gl/forms/LGPPgRQ8tp2C5fmt1

SUMMARY:The Power of Compassion Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Former Tibetan Buddhist Monk\, Choden\, will introduce us to compassion practices. These help to cultivate inner safeness and self-care. Self-compassion means extending compassion to oneself in instances of perceived inadequacy\, failure\, or general suffering. We can extend self-kindness to others and the planet. Drawing from Buddhist insights\, compassion is vital to the integrity and sustainability of the world we live in. We will introduce practices to build on the compassion we have cultivated for ourselves and extend it to all living beings and the environment we live in. \nFor those who have participated in Rob Nairn’s Mindfulness-based Living Courses\, this is the next step. We move from mindfulness to compassion\, to insight and wisdom. \nThe retreat consists of talks\, guided practices\, meditations in nature\, silent sitting and group inquiry. There will also be opportunities to discuss the ethic of Ubuntu/Botho as a follow up to HH the Dalai Lama’s Dialogue in Botswana. \nBackground\nScientific research shows that compassion is an evolved capacity within the brain. It has the capacity to soften and heal the stress and compulsiveness that so characterize modern life. Although compassion is generally linked to kith and kin\, our new brain propensities enable us to extend this to people of different races and cultural backgrounds. Compassion enables us to find a stable place within ourselves. From here\, we can relate with wisdom and kindness to the strong forces of emotions of anxiety\, anger and sadness that move through us. We can also relate to the struggles of other people and find a place of genuine empathy for them. \nPractices\nBuddhist contemplative practice reaffirms the transforming power of compassion. It charts a path to move from genuine self compassion to compassion for others. We will use the model of the Four Immeasurable Contemplations of love\, compassion\, joy and equanimity. Mindfulness is key to this process\, where we find a place of stillness and stability within ourselves. But mindfulness on its own is not enough. We need also to bring a warmth and kindness to ourselves\, to bring self compassion into the mindfulness practice. This lays the ground for resilience and self care. And then too\, self compassion is not enough. It is the basis for compassion for others: seeing how others suffer just as we do. This connection with others is the basis of transformation. \nWe will introduce practices to cultivate inner safeness and self-care that are crucial to building emotional resilience and healthy relationships. Then\, we will then draw on insights from Buddhism to show that compassion is vital to the integrity and sustainability of the world we live in. We will introduce practices to build on the compassion we have cultivated for ourselves and extend it to all living beings and the environment we live in. \nRetreat Leader and Support\nFormally a monk for seven years within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition\, Choden (aka Sean Mc Govern) completed a three year\, three month retreat in 1997. He has been a practicing Buddhist since 1985. Originally from South Africa\, Choden trained as a lawyer and learned meditation under the guidance of Rob Nairn. Now Choden is involved in developing secular mindfulness and compassion programmes. These draw upon the wisdom and methods of the Buddhist tradition\, as well as contemporary insights from psychology and neuroscience. He is an honorary fellow of the University of Aberdeen and teaches on their Postgraduate Study Programme in Mindfulness (MSc). This is the first of its kind to include compassion in its curriculum. In 2013 he published a book with Paul Gilbert\, entitled ‘Mindful Compassion’. The book explores the interface between Buddhist and Evolutionary approaches to compassion training. \nChoden will be supported by Lucy Draper-Clarke\, who has a doctorate in mindfulness and teacher education. She has practised yoga for 20 years and taught yoga and mindfulness in Botswana and South Africa since 2006. She has been lucky enough to study with inspiring Buddhist mindfulness\, and Vinyasa yoga\, teachers\, and offers a combined practice known as Mindfulness Yoga. Her light-hearted approach to teaching allows participants to learn through a joyful\, yet transformative practice. \nRetreat Costs\nThe cost covers accommodation (including bedding and towels)\, food (including 3 ovo-lactarian vegetarian meals per day\, snacks and teas)\, environmental levy to support the Tikologo permaculture site\, and a contribution towards the facilitator’s flight cost: \nSingle\, shared bathroom:              R4562\nTwin/double en suite:                    R4100\nTwin/double\, shared bathroom:  R3500\nDormitory:                                        R2830\nCamping (own tent):                       R2357 \nA deposit of R1800 should accompany the booking\, to confirm your room choice. SUMMARY:Fierce Equanimity Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a four night retreat in the tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Led by lay and monastic dharma teachers\, the retreat will provide an opportunity to create peace within ourselves by cultivating heart wisdom and relaxing into the wonders of the present moment. \nFierce equanimity can be thought of as being engaged with the world’s suffering and even acting to change what is deemed unacceptable\, yet remaining steadfast as one would in meditation. This means that the fluctuations of the mind – anger\, frustration\, and the feelings arising from injustice and the world’s horrors – must be witnessed and allowed to dissolve. Once the mind sees clearly\, focused and more grounded action can take place. \nBut\, letting go of anger and embracing equanimity does not mean succumbing to passivity. As Larry Ward and Peggy Rowe teach\, “Fierce equanimity often means being part of a slow moving force\, but one that is startling in its power and lasting in its effect. Dr Martin Luther King is Larry’s model of fierce equanimity. Though (King) had a lifelong dedication to nonviolence (an important component of equanimity)\, no-one could call him a passive force. Rather\, he heeded the call to remain collected and compassionate in the long fight for social change – to powerful results. If anger is the blinding flare\, then equanimity is the slow burn that drives us day in and day out.” \nJoin us as we wrap ourselves in the beauty of silence of TRC and root ourselves deeply into the earth – nurturing joy\, clarity and insight through the creative expression of yoga\, dance\, sitting\, eating and walking meditation.  Both new and experienced practitioners will enjoy this opportunity to deepen in stillness. \nRetreat Facilitators\nThe retreat will lead by Drs. Larry Ward\, Peggy Rowe\, Ava Avalos and Sister Peace who have studied and practiced together with Thich Nhat Hanh for over 20 years. \nPeggy and Larry live on Vashon Island\, Washington.  Larry has enjoyed over 30 years as a Christian Minister.  In 2001\, Peggy and Larry received Dharma Teacher Transmission from Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. \nDeeply inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Larry Ward has spent his life committed to nonviolent social change\, healing\, and transformation on a global level. In his capacity as International Director of the Institute of Cultural Affairs\, he served in leadership programmes in 35 countries engaged in socio-economic development projects in urban and rural areas. For more information about Larry’s work\, and a video interview with him\, click here. \nPeggy Rowe…\nhas her doctorate in Adult Education and Counseling Psychology.  Peggy serves as a spiritual director for Buddhist practitioners in the US\, as well as in Thailand.  She and Larry co-authored Love’s Garden that was chosen as an outstanding Buddhist publication for 2010.  Together they offer retreats in the United States\, Canada\, Europe\, Asia and this will be their first one in South Africa. \nAva Avalos…\nis an HIV specialist physician who has been living and working in Botswana for the past 14 years. Her area of clinical research and expertise focuses on HIV & TB drug resistance and treatment failure. She also directs her own medical practice and consultancy business in Gaborone. Completing her education in dance and physiological science before studying medicine in California\, Ava continues to teach dance and yoga to both children and adults. She loves her life in Botswana where she supports a regular sangha group\, in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. \n Sister Peace…\ncurrently resides at Plum Village\, France and has been a monastic since 2008. She is a delightful presence and wise teacher\, with a warm voice and ‘young at heart’ energy.  This her second visit to the Tara Rokpa Centre. In 2010\, she co-led a beautiful retreat for participants from Botswana and South Africa. TRC is delighted to welcome her back and to share her wisdom with the international community. \nTo read a beautiful interview with Sister Peace\, click here. \nJoin the teachers and root yourselves into the earth.
