Tikologo Environmental Project
Tikologo is an environmental project which works with nature and shares with people in an attempt to develop a more sustainable future.
Tikologo, seTswana for environment, is the environmental wing of Tara Rokpa Centre. We are situated near Groot Marico deep in the North West Province of South Africa.
We are developing an environmental conservation, education and sustainability model for the local community but which will be appropriate to the North West and South Africa as a whole.
Tikologo aspires to preserve and extend natural environmental systems through the principles of permaculture, agroforestry and natural farming models. These integrate land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies.
The Tikologo project studies and applies whole-systems solutions which include:
- agriculture,
- water harvesting and hydrology,
- energy systems,
- natural building,
- forestry,
- waste management,
- animal systems,
- aquaculture,
- appropriate technology,
- local economics, and
- community development.
Tikologo’s vision is to develop a holistically designed and integrated eco-centre which benefits the earth and all sentient beings.
We aim to achieve the following objectives for the project site:
- Food security
- Water security
- Local economy
- Endemic ecosystem rehabilitation
- Skills development
- An educational program
- Application of sustainable and appropriate technologies
