Writing Retreat with Anton Krueger 7 April

Writing the World into Being –

Anton Krueger, with special guest Jason Donald

“You need to begin to explore another way to write, to build awareness to write from...To create from joy, to create from wonder, demands a continual discipline, a great demands a continual objectivity of spirit, a continual looking out at, and beyond the world created by the senses...”

Thuksey Rinpoche, in Andrew Harvey’s Journey to Ladakh (1983)

Dates: The retreat takes place over six days (five nights), with a shorter weekend-only option (two nights).

Arriving:    Friday 7th April 2017, 18:00

Leaving:    Sunday, 9th April or 12th April 2017, 13:00

For the third year running, Anton Krueger will be presenting his annual “Mindful Writing” retreat, combining practises of his training as a Mindfulness Africa facilitator with his professional experience as a writer teaching Creative Writing at Rhodes University.

On the retreat, we’ll be exploring writing as a way of being in the world, a way of building awareness, a way of being present. Using a variety of guided mindfulness practises in workshops geared towards inspiring creativity and sharpening writing skills, we’ll be drawing on exercises from Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within (Natalie Goldberg) and The Mindful Writer: Noble Truths of the Writing Life (Dinty Moore). The retreat sets out to nurture a space for inspiration and reflection in the beautiful Tara Rokpa valley. The emphasis is not on any specific genre, but rather on discovering and cultivating the emergence of your own personal voice.

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is
translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you
in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will
never exist through any other medium and it will be lost.”

Martha Graham

The retreat will be kept small with a maximum of 15 participants so that there is enough time to focus on each person’s individual work in group feedback sessions. Those joining for the longer retreat of 5 nights will also receive a one-on-one session of 30-60 minutes for feedback on a work in progress of up to 10 000 words. Writers who have an existing project as well as those just starting out are equally welcome. No previous experience required.

311Anton Krueger is an acclaimed writer who has won numerous awards for his plays, poems and critical writing. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Drama, Rhodes University, and also helps to run a Samye Kagyu Buddhist centre in Grahamstown. Anton has presented papers on Mindfulness and creativity in Shanghai, Chicago, Sweden and Scotland.

This year Anton will be joined by guest facilitator, Jason Donald, who’ll be in South Africa shooting a short film in Cape Town. Jason is a South African born novelist, currently living in Switzerland. His latest novel Dalila is in the process of being turned into a major motion picture by Oscar winning screenplay writer / director Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons, Atonement).

Janice Galloway writes of Dalila: “Utterly compelling. Dalila, a multi-layered story of more than one displaced life, is as up-close, resonant and right-now as it gets.”
