A weekend of mindful singing, yoga and community.
Join us for a playful exploration of sound and song, body and breath, connection and cooperation. We will learn to reconnect with ourselves and connect with others through the singing voice and through mindful dialogue practice. We will playfully discover our own voice and thoughts and feelings attached to it, while we’re held by the connecting power of the circle.
In this retreat you will:

When we sing, our body is our instrument. Yoga helps us to attune our instrument and to connect to our breath. We sing with our whole self, our bodily sensations, our mind and soul. This is why singing in community allows for such great powers of connection. This is emphasized with the practice of Circle Singing, which is different from a traditional choir. We compose as we watch and listen, bringing every member of the circle into a cohesive whole in spontaneous song.
Expressing ourselves through the singing voice can connect us to others and to ourselves. Playful exercises in vocal improvisation will give us tools to navigate to vast possibilities in musical expression. Singing when going through emotions can transform them. Improvisation is moving from one tone to the next, constantly evolving. We will deepen our experience of collaboration in exercises of spontaneous and collective composition.
Liberating the voice needs a still mind. Hardly anyone has a neutral position when it comes to singing. We all have our experiences and thoughts and preconceptions attached to our voice. Contemplative dyads and mindfulness practices will help us become conscious of potential blocking thoughts and help us lean into the vulnerability of spontaneous creation.

This retreat works for everyone, who wants to play with the voice and sing, regardless of your level of musical ability.
Kathrin Sirtl is a singer and loves improvising and connecting with others through music and the voice. She sang in a Congolese band in Kinshasa for the last few years and is currently building a circle music community in Gaborone, Botswana. She has studied Vocal Improvisation with Rhiannon, Circle Singing with Bobby McFerrin in the US, Embodied Voicework© with Lisa Sokolov and is very inspired by the vibrant Circle Music Community in Brazil.
Lucy Draper-Clarke has a PhD in mindfulness and has practiced yoga for 20 years. Her light-hearted approach to teaching allows participants to learn through a joyful, yet transformative practice. More info on Lucy here.
